What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease, also called periodontitis or gum disease, is an affliction of the tissue surrounding the teeth resulting from an untreated infection. It begins as inflammation called gingivitis, where the gums become swollen and bleed. If untreated, the gums can recede away from the teeth, exposing roots to bacteria and food. Foreign agents in the blood and tissue lead to infection, which eventually becomes periodontitis or periodontal disease. The end-stage of periodontal disease is bone loss, which leads to tooth loss.

Fortunately, we have periodontal infection treatments available for all stages of concern. Feel free to contact us with specific questions or continue reading for a list of ways we treat advanced gingivitis and severe periodontitis.

What Is Periodontal Treatment?

Many who have been afflicted with periodontal disease believe their smiles are beyond saving, but this is not always the case. Our periodontal disease treatments are a way to stop the progress of gum disease and save your oral health before it becomes a larger concern. The following list details how S&C Dental can help you deal with periodontal disease:

Scaling and Root Planing

This gum disease treatment is recommended for an early gum disease prognosis, but can also be used to lessen the damage of an advanced case. Treatment is aimed at removing hardened plaque that forms beneath the gum line and smoothing out the roots of your teeth before bacteria reaches them.

Bite Adjustment

Advanced gum disease often leads to weakening of the jaw bones and surrounding tissue, which causes your top and bottom teeth to fall out of alignment. A bite adjustment prevents problems such as grinding, which further degrade the integrity of the teeth.

Oral Hygiene

Oral Hygiene is the preemptive measures taken before periodontal gum disease treatment becomes necessary. Our part includes professional consultation and tools you can apply at home, as well as the intensive cleaning measures that prevent tartar buildup.

Perio Protect Trays

A Perio tray is a non-invasive means to administer medicine to the gums using trays that go across your teeth. These trays are prescribed by a dentist but applied by the patient at home. We handle all the steps from your initial consultation to casting the mold, to a final fitting.
