Dental Emergencies Q & A

Sometimes, it can be challenging to know what constitutes a dental emergency and what can wait for a scheduled appointment. Take a moment to read through our answers to common questions about our dental emergency services and be sure to give us a call if you need further support:

What Is a Dental Emergency?

If you believe you are experiencing a dental emergency, go ahead and give our practice a call. We can help calm your nerves and discuss accidents or symptoms. Once we have some insight into your dental emergency’s details, we can advise you on what steps to take next. You are likely dealing with a dental emergency if you experience the following:

  • Your tooth is cracked
  • You have a broken tooth
  • Your tooth has been knocked out
  • You’re experiencing severe bleeding
  • You’re experiencing severe pain
What Should I Do If My Tooth Is Knocked Out?

If your tooth has been knocked out, pick it up by the crown and gently rinse it off with warm water. If you can, place the tooth back in its socket to help it from drying out. If you can’t do this for whatever reason, be sure to wrap the tooth up in clean gauze and keep it moist while on your way to see us. If your tooth has been knocked out of place but is still intact, very gently try to push it back into its normal position and try to keep it in place until you arrive at our office. We can help your tooth better survive any trauma if you visit us within 60 minutes of the incident, so don’t wait to get the help you need and deserve!

What Can I Do to Avoid a Dental Emergency?

Some significant ways you can reduce your chances of dealing with dental emergencies in the future include the following:

  • Wear a mouthguard if you play contact sports
  • Avoid biting on solid objects such as ice and hard candy
  • Schedule regular dental visits every six months
  • Practice good oral hygiene
What If I Have a Chipped, Cracked, or Fractured Tooth?

If you’ve damaged a tooth, it’s best to schedule an appointment with S&C Dental immediately. While you wait to be seen, you can care for the tooth by rinsing your mouth with warm water and can also use an ice pack or ibuprofen to reduce any pain or swelling. We do not recommend taking aspirin, as it can make you bleed more than you usually would.
